क्या मरियम ने जब ईसा को जन्म दिया था, तब वह कुंवारी या अविवाहित थीं?
सबसे पहली बात कि यदि मरियम ने सचमुच बिना विवाह के या बिना चमत्कार के यीशु को जन्म दिया होता, तो यहूदियों ने उसे इस पाप के लिए पत्थर से संगसार करके मार डाला होता, जैसा कि यहूदी धर्म में जानी के लिए निर्धारित सज़ा है। बाइबिल के अनुसार, मरियम के रिश्तेदार (शायद कजिन भाई और मंगेतर), यूसुफ (Joseph) ने मरियम की गर्भावस्था और प्रसव और प्रसवोत्तर देखभाल के संबंध में मदद की थी। इस्लाम में जोसेफ का कोई उल्लेख नहीं है, हालांकि, हमल के हालातों में मरियम की किसी ने मदद नहीं की इसके खिलाफ भी कुरान में कुछ नहीं है। इस्लाम अनुसार मरियम को मठ को समर्पित कर दिया गया था जंहा पैगम्बर ज़करिया उनके गार्जियन बने जो मरियम के अंकल (माँ की बहन के पति और ह. हारुन के वंशज) भी थे। उन्होंने बचपन के दौरान मरियम की देखभाल करी थी। ज़करिया के बेटे याह्या भी एक पैगम्बर थे और यीशु के कज़िन थे। मरियम को अल्लाह की तरफ से खाने पीने की नयमतें मिलती थी। कुरान संकेत देता है कि उनका कोई मंगेतर नहीं हो सकता क्योंकि मरियम ने कहा कि न तो मुझे किसी ने छुआ है और न ही मैं अविवाहित हूं यानि इससे पता लगता है कि शीघ्र भविष्य में उसके विवाह की कोई संभावना नहीं थी।
बाइबिल (मैथ्यू 1:18-25; ल्युक 1:34) में जोसेफ को उनका मंगेतर बताया गया है (और गर्भाधारण के बाद में पति), जो उनसे एक अरसे के बाद तब मिला जब वो गर्भाधारण कर चुकी थी (जोसफ को इस बात की खबर ख्वाब में फरिश्ते ने दी थी जब वो तलाक की सोच रहे थे और कहा था कि अपनी पत्नी मरियम को घर ले जाओ, उसके पेट में जो है पवित्र रूह की तरफ से है यानी वो परमेश्वर के चमत्कार से गर्भवती हुई थी)। जबकि प्रोटेस्टेंट का मानना था कि जोसेफ यीशु के पिता थे और उन्होंने यीशु के जन्म के बाद मरयम से शादी की और आगे भी अन्य बच्चों को जन्म दिया क्योंकि बाइबिल (मैथ्यू 13:55-56, मार्क 6:3) में ही लिखा मिलता है कि यह यीशु 'बढ़ई है/बढ़ई का बेटा' है, मरियम का बेटा है और वे उसके भाई (नाम सहित) और बहने हैं। कैथोलिक (ईसाइयों की बहुमत) द्वारा इन्हें या तो जोसेफ की पूर्व शादी से हुए बच्चे माना जाता है या यीशू के अन्य कजिन रिश्तेदार। कैथोलिक मानते हैं कि यीशु बिन बाप के पैदा हुए थे. प्रोटेस्टेंट का कहना है कि ओल्ड टेस्टेमेन्ट (Isaiah 7:14) में मरियम के लिए हिब्रू शब्द 'अलमाह' प्रयोग हुआ है जिसके मायने असलन यंग गर्ल है और वर्जिन भी हैं, मगर बाद में न्यू टेस्टेमेन्ट की इंजीलों (यीशु के सहाबी, ताबाइन, तबेताबाईन आदि द्वारा 60-100 AD में निर्मित) में इस शब्द के मायने सिर्फ वर्जिन किया जाने लगा, जबकि इन इंजीलों से पहले किसी भी क्रिस्चियन टेक्स्ट, लेटर्स आदि में कुंवारी मरियम शब्द का ज़िक्र नहीं है।

यह कोई ईमान और कुफ्र तय करने का मुद्दा नहीं है। इस पर विद्वानों की एक अकलियतों में मतभेद हैं। मौलाना अब्दुल करीम अथरी, अल्लामा तमन्ना इमादी, मौलाना इनायातुल्लाह गुजराती और मौलाना वज़ीराबादी जैसे कुछ मुस्लिम विद्वानों ने ईसा के चमत्कारी जन्म पर सवाल उठाया है और माना है कि यह एक प्राकृतिक गर्भाधारण था।
सबसे पहली बात, मुसलमान यह नहीं मानते कि ईसा खुदा का कलमा (Word of God) थे, जैसा कि ईसाई मानते हैं। दूसरी बात, बाइबिल लिखे जाने से पहले ईसाई रिकॉर्ड में कहीं भी मरियम के कुंवारेपन में चमत्कारिक रूप से ईसा को जन्म देने का उल्लेख नहीं है, जैसे कि ईसा के शिष्यों के किसी भी पत्र में। ईसा मसीह के लगभग 100 साल बाद जा कर यह मरियम के कुंवारी माँ की धारणा जन्म ली जब गोस्पेल लिखी गईं। बाइबिल (मैथ्यू/लुका) के अनुसार, मैरी का विवाह जोसेफ से हुआ था, लेकिन वह तब गर्भवती हुई जब वो उनके साथ नहीं थे और उनसे अलग रह रहे थे।
कुरान में कुंवारी मरियम शब्द का उल्लेख नहीं है। साथ ही, कुरान में कोई प्रत्यक्ष आयत नहीं है जो कहती है कि मरियम एक कुंवारी माँ थी। इस पक्ष में उद्धृत की गई आयत का तात्पर्य केवल यह है कि वह उस समय कुंवारी थी जब फरिश्तों ने उन्हें ईसा के जन्म के बारे में खबर दी थी। जैसे कुरान की एक आयत अनुसार, मुसलमानों का मानना है कि मरियम को जो भोजन मिलता था वह अल्लाह द्वारा जन्नत से भेजा जाता था, लेकिन कुरान की इस आयत में ऐसा स्पष्ट रूप से नहीं कहा गया है। इसके अलावा कुरान में एक जगह कई पैगम्बरों के पिताओं की ओर ईशारा करा गया है और वंहा ईसा का भी ज़िक्र है।
ऐसा माना जाता है कि कुंवारी मरियम की धारणा ईसाई धर्म से ली गयी थी और ऐसा कहा जाता है कि मरियम की शादी जोसेफ से हुई थी लेकिन उस समय वह अंतरंगता (physical intimacy) में दिलचस्पी नहीं रखते थे। इसलिए मरियम आश्चर्य हुआ कि वह कैसे बच्चे को जन्म दे सकती है जबकि उसे किसी पुरुष ने छुआ तक नहीं है (तब तक दोनों में सम्बन्ध नहीं बने थे)। लेकिन अल्लाह की इच्छा थी कि वह निकट भविष्य में एक चुने हुए बच्चे (अल्लाह की रूह - यीशु और आदम को प्राप्त) को जन्म दे और यही कारण है कि बाद में जोसेफ का मन ;पलटा और उन दोनों के बीच अंतरंगता हुई और बच्चा हुआ (हालाँकि बाइबिल में इसके उलट उल्लेख हुआ है)।
यह एक प्राकृतिक प्रक्रिया थी जिसमें समय लगा, ठीक उसी तरह जैसे अल्लाह के 'कुन' कहने के बाद ब्रह्मांड का निर्माण समय के साथ स्वाभाविक रूप से हुआ। इसके अतिरिक्त, कुरान पैगंबर अब्राहम, पैगंबर ज़कारिया के बारे में और उनकी पत्नीयों के बारे में बताता है कि वे सब उम्र दराज़ थे (पति बूढ़े हो चुके थे और महिलाएं रजोनिवृत्ति/menopause प्राप्त कर चुकी थी) और बच्चे पैदा नहीं कर सकते थे, लेकिन उन्होंने चमत्कारिक रूप से बच्चे पैदा किए जैसा कि अल्लाह चाहता था। इसका मतलब यह नहीं है कि गर्भधारण से पहले उनमें कोई अंतरंगता नहीं हुई थी।
जो लोग मानते हैं कि मरियम hermaphroditic हो सकती है, उन्हें समझना चाहिए कि महिलाएं अपने आप Y chromosome नहीं बना सकती हैं, जो कि पुत्र पैदा करने के लिए आवश्यक है। इसके अलावा, अगर ईसा चमत्कारिक रूप से पैदा हुए थे, उनके पास artificial Y chromosome होना चाहिए, हालाँकि सामान्य तौर पर ईसा अन्य इज़राइलियों की तरह ही दिखते थे और उसमें कोई artificial traits नहीं थे।
■ Quran 11:72-73: Sarah asked how can she have a child in this old age, and as her husband (Ibrahim) is also an old man? The angels asked, do you wonder at the decree of your Lord?
■ Quran 19:1-11: This is a reminder of your Lord to His servant Zachariah, saying, My bones have become brittle and grey hair has spread across my head. My wife is barren. Grant me an heir. Who will inherit prophethood from me and the family of Jacob. The angels announced, O Zachariah! We give you the good news of the birth of a son, whose name will be John — a name We have not given to anyone before. He wondered, How can I have a son when my wife is barren, and I have become extremely old? An angel replied, Your Lord says, it will be, it is easy for Me, just as I created you before, when you were nothing! Zachariah said, Grant me a sign. He responded, Your sign is that you will not be able to speak to people for three nights, despite being healthy. So he came out to his people from the sanctuary, signaling to them to glorify Allah morning and evening.
■ Quran 3:45-46 : Remember when angels proclaimed, O Marry, Allah gives you good news of a word (Kalimatin) from him, his name will be Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, honored in this world and the hereafter and he will be one of those nearest to Allah. He will speak to people in his infancy and adulthood and will be one of the righteous.
■ Quran 3:47: Mary wondered, My Lord! How can I have a child when no man has ever touched me? An angel replied, So will it be. Allah creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He simply tells it, Be! And it is!
■ Quran 6:84-86: We gave to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - all of them, We guided. And Noah, We guided before; and among his descendants, David and Solomon and Job and Joseph and Moses and Aaron. Thus do We reward the doers of good. Zechariah and John and Jesus and Elias - and all were of the righteous. Ishmael and Elisha and Jonah and Lot - and all of them, We preferred over the worlds.
■ Quran 6:87: And from their fathers (ābāihim) and their descendants and their brothers - and We chose them and We guided them to a straight path.
■ Quran 3:37: Every time Zechariah entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, "O Mary, from where is this (coming) to you?" She said, "It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account."
■ Quran 5:112: (Jesus' disciples said), 'O Jesus, Son of Mary, can your Lord send down to us a table (spread with food) from the heaven?'"

Similarities between Jesus & Pagan Gods
Jesus has some striking similarities of surface-level with the mythological figures Mithra (Persian), Dionysus (Greek) and Horus (Egyptian). Jesus was called Christ (Greek: Anointed one).
Mithra/Mitra first appeared in ancient Persian religion (Zoroastrianism) as a god, but later, the Roman Mithraic cult (1st–4th cent. CE) developed him into a savior figure. He was cosnidered to bhe born around Dec 25 (in Roman Mithraism) from a virgin (or from a rock symbolizing purity), attended by shepherds at birth, had a last supper with his followers and died & resurrected. These parallels are believed to be come from later Roman Mithraism (after Jesus), not the older Persian version.
Dionysus, a Greek God was considered to be born of a divine father (Zeus) and mortal mother (Semele), died and resurrected (reborn from Zeus’ thigh), turned water into wine in some stories, his followers symbolically ate his body and drank his blood (in ritual wine).
Horus, a Egyptian (2500 BC) was considered to be born of a virgin (Isis resurrected Osiris and conceived miraculously), his birth was announced by a star, visited by wise men, baptized in river by Anup (similar to John). He had 12 disciples, healed the sick. He was killed, dismembered, scattered, then entombed and resurrected by Isis. He became ruler of afterlife underworld. He was called “KRST” (anointed one) in some late texts.
